What
is iTravelSyndicate?
iTravelSyndicate
is an online marketplace for travel content, which includes
articles ranging from 200 to 6,000 words. Think of us as an
evolved syndicate — smarter, quicker, wittier and far more
useful than our predecessors. iTravelSyndicate allows editors
worldwide to search for the articles they need and purchase
those articles at prices far below what they would pay to
commission a freelance writer. Editors buy nonexclusive
reprint rights, which include digital reprint/archive rights.
However, editors may not resell articles for which they
purchased rights from iTravelSyndicate.
Why
iTravelSyndicate?
That’s
simple. More than 1,000 editors worldwide shop
iTravelSyndicate for travel content. We’ll
help you do what you don’t
want to do: sell the reprint rights to your articles. All
freelance writers know selling reprint rights is essential to
making a living in this business. So why spend time selling
when you can spend time writing?
What are the
fees?
There is a $39 per year
syndication fee. There is also a 40/60 revenue share for all
articles sold. Writers receive 60% of the sales price of the
article with 40% going to iTravelSyndicate.
How
do editors make a purchase?
Editors
can purchase nonexclusive reprint rights online by paying for
the article with a credit card (MasterCard or VISA) or they
may send a check payable to Marco Polo Publications, Inc.
Editors are granted nonexclusive reprint rights only after
paying for the article. We do not allow billing after use.
How
much do I get paid?
Writers
set the price for nonexclusive reprint rights and receive 60%
of that price every time the article is purchased. For
instance, if you list one of your articles at $100, you will
receive $60 every time an editor purchases the nonexclusive
reprint rights.
When
do I get paid?
You
will receive a check from Marco Polo Publications, Inc.,
parent company of iTravelSyndicate, within 30 days of your
article’s sale.
How
many articles may I syndicate?
You
may syndicate as many articles as you would like; there is no
limit. However, you are paid only when an editor purchases
one of your articles.
Must
I relinquish copyrights?
Of
course not. iTravelSyndicate’s objective is to empower
travel writers. You retain the rights to all of your articles,
and iTravelSyndicate serves as a marketplace through which you
may sell nonexclusive reprint rights.
Can
I take my article(s) offline when I choose?
Yes,
you may take your article(s) offline at any time by logging in as
a writer and deleting the article you’d like to take
offline. This article can then no longer be purchased on
iTravelSyndicate.
Do
you syndicate photographs as well?
No,
iTravelSyndicate deals with written content only. However,
when you upload your article to be syndicated, you can select
whether photography is available or not. If it is available
and a purchasing editor would like to use it,
iTravelSyndicate will then put you, the writer, in touch with
the editor. The fee you charge for the photographs is between
you and the editor, and iTravelSyndicate does not receive any
portion of that fee.
How
does iTravelSyndicate prevent copyright infringements?
Only
registered editors are allowed to view articles in their entirety.
iTravelSyndicate staffers verify all editors, and only
professional editors are allowed to access iTravelSyndicate.
Professional editors are what they are — professionals
— and they should never steal articles. However,
should iTravelSyndicate discover that a publication has used
an iTravelSyndicate article illegally, we will prosecute to the fullest extent
of the law.
What are
nonexclusive reprint rights?
Nonexclusive reprint rights
allow publications to publish an article that has been
published previously. Because rights are nonexclusive, the
reprint rights may be sold to multiple publications at the
same time.
What does
that mean?
For example, if you sold
First North American Serial Rights to Travel Magazine A
and the article has been published, you may sell nonexclusive
reprint rights to Travel Magazine B and Daily
Newspaper C as long as you did not sell exclusive rights
to Travel Magazine A. If you are unsure what rights you
hold for a previously sold article, please check with the
magazine to which you originally sold the article.
Does
iTravelSyndicate grant other rights?
When a syndicated article is
purchased from iTravelSyndicate, the publication also is
granted nonexclusive digital reprint rights. However, the
purchasing publication may not resell the article.
What if I
still hold First North American Serial Rights?
You may still syndicate the
content on iTravelSyndicate, but you will forfeit your First
North American Serial Rights. iTravelSyndicate deals in
nonexclusive reprint rights only. At this time, there are no
exceptions.
Can I
decide which publications are allowed to publish my article?
No. Once you submit your
article and syndication price to iTravelSyndicate, any
newspaper, magazine, publishing company or Web site may
purchase it. However, you can view a sales report from
iTravelSyndicate and keep abreast of which companies are using
your work.
Will I
know which publication has purchased my article?
Yes. Writers can access a
sales report from the Writer Control Panel menu. Listed on the
sales report will be the name of the purchasing
publication/company. It is up to the writer to obtain the
clips should he/she want them. (iTravelSyndicate does not
provide copies of the published article.) However, we
discourage writers from contacting the publication's editors
directly, as one of iTravelSyndicate's conveniences for
editors is being able to purchase content immediately and
without hassle.
How
do you market iTravelSyndicate?
More
than 1,000 editors come to iTravelSyndicate because it’s
become an essential part of their editorial department.
Additionally, iTravelSyndicate sends out a weekly newsletter
to registered editors featuring teasers for new articles
selected by iTravelSyndicate’s editorial department.
